GigaSpaces eXtreme Application Platform (XAP) has been optimized on Sun Fire T1000 and Sun Fire T2000 servers running the Solaris 10 Operating System (Solaris OS).

This optimization enables "customers to get extreme scalability and performance," said Amnon Raviv, senior director of Strategic Alliances at GigaSpaces. "We expect customers will see similar results with XAP on Solaris 10 and Sun's x64 (x86, 64-bit) systems. By choosing XAP and the Solaris 10 OS, customers get the most bang for their buck -- super-fast performance, and ability to scale across a wide range of hardware."

Customers of GigaSpaces include Dow Jones, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Virgin Mobile, Nortel and others. These customers require high-performance, low-latency solutions for high-volume transactions and data processing.

Sun offers solutions to organizations that process market data such as the Reuters Market Data System (RMDS) 6.0 that runs on the Solaris 10 OS, which manages market data for trading in real time. GigaSpaces has integrated its GigaSpaces XAP into Sun's market data solutions so capital market customers can process high volumes of market data in short processing times.

"Many of our customers in the Securities industry are facing performance and scalability challenges with their data-intensive trading applications," said Ambreesh Khanna, Sun Microsystems' CTO for Financial Services. "Leveraging GigaSpaces' ability to process large amounts of data from multiple sources on the grid in real time, with the high performance and low power consumption of our Sun Fire servers, Sun's Market Data solution is delivering on the primary needs of Wall Street's largest, most demanding firms."

In addition to optimizing GigaSpaces XAP on Solaris 10 OS and the Sun Fire servers, engineers from Sun and GigaSpaces recently completed joint scalability and tuning studies of GigaSpaces XAP middleware on Java Platform Standard Edition 5 (J2SE or Java SE). "The results showed the highly parallel processing architectures of GigaSpaces XAP and the Solaris 10 OS on UltraSPARC T1-based servers to be highly complementary and together form a superior, linearly scalable platform for running low latency, data-intensive, multi-threaded applications in financial services organizations," according to a press release from GigaSpaces.

The GigaSpaces eXtreme Application Platform Version 6.0 has a full version (GigaSpaces eXtreme Application Platform 6.0), grid version (GigaSpaces XAP Enterprise Data Grid (EDG) 6.0) and a community edition (GigaSpaces XAP Community Edition 6.0) that is free for all uses, including production.
