NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 and FX 4600 graphics boards are now available for the Sun UltraTM 40 M2 workstation. These boards in the Sun Ultra 40 M2 workstations are well suited for professional 3D applications such as MCAD, non-linear video editing and other visualization applications.

The boards have a unified architecture, which dynamically allocates compute, geometry, shading and pixel processing power to deliver optimized graphics processing units (GPUs) performance.

NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 and FX 4600 graphics boards fearture large frame buffers, the "industry's first 1.5GB frame buffer and massive memory bandwidth up to 76.8GB/sec. delivers high throughput for interactive visualization of large models and high-performance for real time processing of large textures and frames and enables the highest quality and resolution full-scene antialiasing (FSAA)," according to the NVIDIA web site.

Up to two NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 or two NVIDIA Quadro FX 4600 cards can be configured in a single Sun Ultra 40 M2 Workstation to function as two individual graphics accelerators, or in SLI (Scalable Link Interface) mode.

Sun Ultra 40 Workstation family supports up to four terabytes of internal storage in a tower form factor. It can have up to four PCI Express slots. The workstations come with a Sun N1TM Grid Engine software license so the workstations can be deployed in a grid environment.

In another announcement from Sun related to the Sun Ultra 40 M2 workstation, the AMD Opteron 120 Watt 2220 SE Processor has been replaced with the more energy efficient AMD Opteron 2222 SE (3.0 Ghz) Dual-Core Processor. This new processor is also available in the Sun Fire X4100 M2 and X4200 M2 Servers.
