At the JavaOne Conference this past week, Sun made many announcements, starting with making Java code available to the open source community (see article [1808]). Another big announcement revealed the new JavaFX Script and mobile software (see [18081] and [18082]). More news mobile developers will be interested in is the collaboration between Sun and Ericsson to build an open-source, Java-technology based communications application server for deploying on wireless networks (see [18078]).
This year's Duke's Choice Awards covered a range of Java technology based applications, from an educational program to help students write better to some games and software for managing a restaurant [18074].
Developers can also get a look at the preview of NetBeans IDE 6.0 which now supports JRuby and more (see [18075]). Sys Admins also have some resources to peruse this week: Guides on Sun-Siebel installations [18067] and virtualizing with LDoms and Sun servers [18070].
Sun is offering its 19-inch Flat Panel TFT LCD Digital Monitor through June 30, 2007, for $298. The monitor is normally priced at $800. Sun describes its monitor as "perfect for software development, business applications or demanding graphics programs, this flat–screen monitor offers incredible resolution and vivid color."

"Now the free and open source community has access to implementations of Java Platform Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition and Micro Edition as free software under the GPL," said Rich Green, EVP of Software, Sun, at the 2007 JavaOne Conference.
Sun and Ericsson will jointly develop an open source, Java technology-based communications application server for deploying on wireless networks. The two companies will work on the Sun Java System Communications Application Server as part of the GlassFish community and the SailFin open source project.
Milestone Release (MR2) of the phoneME Feature project is now available. It has new features over the March 2007 b10 release, bug fixes, and improvement to the final MR2 build as compared to the b10 development release.
Sun released Sun Java Real-Time System 2.0, a standards-based extension of the Java platform. Sun Java Real-Time System 2.0 solves the problem of setting process priorities according to their importance (something typically not supported in Java software applications). It contains enhancements over the first conformant commercial implementation of the Real-Time Specification for Java (JSR-001), including a predictable method for recycling memory within Java software programs.
Now, companies that are not members of the Unified Testing Initiative (UTI) can have access to the UTI digital security certificate and be able to run Java Verified signed applications on their mobile phones. UTI aims to facilitate the growth of the mobile application market.
A new initiative from Sun will support OpenID to make to applicable to more business and IT uses. Ongoing work includes combining and converging enterprise-ready technologies such as SAML and the Liberty Alliance's Identity Web Services Framework.

Open ESB 2.0 Preview is available for download. This release is compatible with third-party components, has improved integration capabilities with other open source software offerings such as GlassFish and the NetBeans IDE.

Sun released the early alpha version of a new scripting language, JavaFX Script. The scripting language is designed to help developers create content faster. It takes advantage of Java's ubiquity and runtime. JavaFX Script offers a close integration with other Java components (applications and infrastructure).
The NetBeans 6.0 Integrated Development Environment (IDE) Preview release is now available. New features include support for Ruby and JavaScript and enhancements to the NetBeans GUI Builder.
Matisse GUI Builder received the JAX Innovation Community Award at the 2007 JAX Conference, held in Wiesbaden, Germany in April. This award is decided by the conference attendees.
Kenneth C. At the 2007 JavaOne Conference, Sun announced a new family of Java technology-based products -- JavaFX software. The first product will be JavaFX Mobile software. JavaFX Mobile is a complete mobile phone software system available via OEM license to carriers, content owners and consumer electronics manufacturers.
