Weekly Summary:

The Solaris 10 OS has been successfully booted on the Rock processor, a significant milestone in the development and shipping schedule of the processor and the systems that will ship with it. See the News story number [18046]. David Yen also discusses this accomplishment in article [18045].

More on processors is presented this week with a look inside the new SPARC64 VI processor [18041]. The processor is in the recently announced SPARC Enterprise servers; there is a promotion to refresh the system for the next generation - see [18037].

A new Sun BluePrints document discusses updates to the Dynamic Reconfiguration feature on the new servers [18026]. Some new benchmarks show the Solaris 10 OS outperforming Linux [18032] and a world record for the Sun StorageTek 2540 [18036].

NetBeans Software Day is on Monday, May 7th, so here is a NetBeans tip [18011] and a new NetBeans book to look at [17954] in between sessions if you are attending or to check out if you are not attending. We'll have more from the JavaOne Conference next week.

The recently announced Sun Streaming System can help companies deliver video cost effectively. Get the technical details of the components of the system in article [18108].

The Netra T2000 server now supports 146 GB hard disk drives, up from the 73 GB drives previously used [18105]. Also offering expanded capabilities are new LTO 4 FC tape drives for certain Sun StorageTek tape libraries [18107]; they offer 800GB/cartridge native capacity.

If you are looking to reduce the management of the traditional desktop environment, then take a look at a new podcast that explains the virtual desktop concept and how to use Sun Ray thin clients, Sun Secure Global Desktop software and VMware (see article [18146]). At the JavaOne Conference this past week, Sun made many announcements, starting with making Java code available to the open source community (see article [1808]). Another big announcement revealed the new JavaFX Script and mobile software (see [18081] and [18082]). More news mobile developers will be interested in is the collaboration between Sun and Ericsson to build an open-source, Java-technology based communications application server for deploying on wireless networks (see [18078]).

This year's Duke's Choice Awards covered a range of Java technology based applications, from an educational program to help students write better to some games and software for managing a restaurant [18074].

Developers can also get a look at the preview of NetBeans IDE 6.0 which now supports JRuby and more (see [18075]). Sys Admins also have some resources to peruse this week: Guides on Sun-Siebel installations [18067] and virtualizing with LDoms and Sun servers [18070].

The IDC Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker Report states Sun gained market share for a fifth straight quarter [18149]. Learn about Sun's newest line of servers, the Sun SPARC Enterprise family in article [18122].

Also announced this week is a new storage system, the Sun StorageTek 9990V enterprise system for demanding datacenter environments. Get details in article [18143]. Sun's recently announced low-cost arrays, the Sun StorageTek 2500 arrays, use SAS technology; see article [18128] for the advantages of SAS over SCSI. If you've been wanting to upgrade your tape library, there is an upgrade promotion for the Sun StorageTek L1400 (see [18110]).
