Lower Cooling and Power Costs of Tape Drives

A recent report from The Clipper Group has found that tape is less expensive to purchase and use than SATA disk technology. The study assessed the costs with an example of an IT department of a company that needs to store about 125 TB of data that is infrequently accessed. Based on their configuration, the acquisition cost was 6.5 more for a SATA disk system versus an automated tape system, and the cooling costs were about 25 times more. See the report for full savings details.
