Could Sun retain StorageTek’s leadership after a full year of ownership? In the enterprise tape library category, the answer is an emphatic “Yes.”

High Rankings for Enterprise Tape Library from Sun
Diogenes Labs-Storage Magazine Quality Awards Report

The Diogenes Labs-Storage magazine Quality Awards for tape libraries ranks products from Sun, HP, IBM, ADIC Scalar, Dell and others. In the enterprise tape library category Sun StorageTekTM earned high marks with the StreamLine SL500/SL8500 and/or L700E/L1400M.

Enterprise Tape Library Results

Rankings were broken down from overall ranking to sales force competence, product features, initial product quality, product reliability, technical support and the question as to whether the user would buy this product again. Results indicate brand loyalty is strong: "only 9 percent of respondents say they own libraries from three or more vendors."

Sun scored high in all these except for sales force competency, which the report attributes to reorganization after the StorageTek acquisition. The fact that the Sun product scored well overall is "perhaps a testament to Sun’s product quality that its other category scores were strong enough to overcome this".

A promotion on the Sun StorageTek SL8500 modular library system is available that can save you 50 percent off the list price if you trade in a qualifying tape library. See article [17709] for details.

In the midrange tape library section of the report, Sun did not fair as well as in the enterprise section. Spectra Logic and IBM often scored better than the Sun StorEdgeTM L25/100/180 or the Sun StorageTekTM C4 tape library.
