Weekly Summary:

Creating the next generation of OpenSolaris and the Solaris 10 OS users, sys admins and developers is the goal of the Solaris University Challenge (see article [17640]). OpenSolaris resources for educators can be found online [17633]. For those of you who already work with Solaris, be sure to check your systems for the Daylight Savings Time changes coming up [17628]. And Sun is looking for your input for its Solaris Developer Blueprint Training survey (see the form online in article [17627] and enter for a chance to win a Sun Ultra 20 workstation with a monitor).

The debate about whether to use GPLv3 or CDDL for OpenSolaris is documented online [17632]. If you have a lot of systems to register, Sun will send you a thank you gift if you register before February 28 (see [17623]). Learn about DTrace in a new course [17608].

Solaris 10 OS has surpassed 7 million registered licenses ([see article 17705]).

Following up on the 3SGM Congress of last week, we have more information for those in the telecommunications field. See diagrams of the Sun Open Telecommunications Platform 1.0 online (in article [17673]) and learn more in a Sun Net Talk on the same technology [17672].

Another video this week is from SDN, featuring Solaris Containers [17692]. Among new products introduced by Sun this week are the Sun Multi-threaded 10 Gig E Networking Card [17707] (there is a promotion to try it for free [17708]), version 7.0 of the Sun Java System Web Server [17577] and a tech tip on running Ruby on Rails on the web server [17613].

New configurations and higher performance processors are featured in Sun Fire X2200 M2 servers [17682] and the Sun Fire X4600 M2 server [17678].

In Storage this week, we report on a new HBA, software and a benchmark. In Hardware, the Niagara 2 is examined [17688] and two Ethernet adapters are discussed.

At Sun's education conference, Sun addressed issues such as how technology can facilitate education better in the future [17638]. Programs abound to assist students learn programming in Java and the Solaris OS; see article [17637] for details.

Have some Java skills you want to show off? Especially for mobile devices? Enter one of the upcoming contests (see links in article 17645]).

Mobile technology was the center of attention at the 3GSM Congress [17675]. Behind the flashy devices is a lot of Java technology and applications that may not be so sexy but make everything run such as a Data Retention Solution from Sun and Comptel [17665]. We'll have more on Telco next week.

Sun has also added more ways to help developers take advantage of the Solaris OS with the Solaris Express, Developer Edition, program and the open source tool Solaris + AMP [17666]. There are two new Florida OpenSolaris Users groups; one in Ft. Lauderdale and one in Tampa [17778]. First meetings will be held March 12th and 13th.

Sun gained market share for the fourth straight quarter, according to the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker report [17742]. What should help server sales even more are some repricings due to less expensive AMD processors: Sun Blade X8400 and X8420 server modules [17716] and the Sun Fire V40z server have been repriced [17719]. Remanufactured servers are also available [17676].

Also making news this week are Sun's enterprise level tape library systems, as tested by Diogenes Labs and Storage magazine [17732] where they earned high rankings.

What economic incentives are in place for physicians to file patient claims electronically and how can that patient data remain secure? These are some of the questions discussed by Joerg Schwarz, Sun's director of healthcare and life sciences in article [17743]. Sun offered some tech solutions at the recent HIMSS healthcare event in New Orleans [17741]. The Healthcare section this week provides more details, including an RFID training course [17744], ANSI approved standards [17737], and a Sun Net Talk [17721] on digitizing data.
