Weekly Summary:

Sun technology has made an impression on many this past year, and people are looking forward to how those building blocks will help the company go farther in 2007. InfoWorld has selected the Sun Fire X4200 server, the Sun Fire X4600 M2 and NetBeans 5.5 IDE in its 2007 award listings (see article [17468].) Read more commentary in article [17462].

Sun' promotions offer you a chance to try before you buy their servers such as the award winning Sun Fire X4200 server (see article [17461]). A review of the Sun Fire X4600 M2 server is also online this week [17420]. Another promotion is available with help integrating new Sun technology into your datacenter [17459]. Also available to help manage servers is the new version 6, update 1, of the Sun Management Center 3.5 software [17448], which provides support for high-end servers.

Project Looking Glass 1.0 has been released (see article [17444]). There is a video demonstrating how you can move windows out of your way to have more desktop space to work on. If you haven't seen it, take a look. A video is worth a thousand words.

Make the features of Solaris 10 OS even better? That's what the Solaris Cluster does, and it does it with even more third-party software choices than before (see article number [17485]). Next week we'll cover some classes on the Cluster. Also improved is the Sun Blade 8000 family with the addition of a 4-socket module, the x8400 [17486].

The Sun Java CAPS suite was listed near the top of a Forrester report [17495], and how it is used in the insurance industry is outlined in [17467]. This week we feature a Financial Services section showcasing Sun technologies at work in the industry.

The Sun Globalization (G11N) team has made the Solaris G11N source code open source and available at OpenSolaris.org [17473]. There is also a project to make the glossaries available in many languages [17472].

Good news from Sun this week: Sun is returning to profitability this quarter (see article number [17557]), and the company has a new agreement with Intel to collaborate on making new servers with Xeon processors [17551]. Schwartz expresses enthusiasm about where Sun is now and how it got there (see article [17522]).

Another award came Sun's way in the form of the Stevie Award given to Kim Jones in the Sun Education division [17524]. We follow up this week with more on the new Solaris subscriptions [17512]. Read about Sun's competition with Red Hat (in article [17556]).
