Volume 105, Issue 4

We're outgrowing the competition because we have the industry's best, most complete server line-up and no one comes close to matching Solaris 10

-- John Fowler, EVP, Sun's systems group

The IDC Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker has reported that Sun has increased its market share more than any of the other top six server makers, including IBM, Dell and HP. Factors contributing to the success are the sales of Sun Fire servers and adoption of the SolarisTM 10 Operating System (Solaris OS).

Important areas of competition where Sun achieved success are:

  • Sun's market share grew while HP lost 1.5 points in the overall factory revenue server market share.

  • In the UNIX segment, Sun grew factory revenue market share by 3.6 points while HP lost 5 points of share.

  • IBM lost .2 points of unit market share in the overall server market.

Sun's server sales were $1.31 billion in the third quarter, up 24.7 percent from a year ago, according to Gartner's estimates. Sun had 10.1 percent market share, up from 8.5 percent, as reported by the San Jose Mercury News.

John Fowler, Sun Systems Group EVP, applauded the news of Sun's third consecutive quarter of growth in server market share: "The way we'll continue to grow is simple: focus on working with customers for whom network computing is a vital competitive differentiator, and deliver innovative products that give them an edge in the marketplace."

Other details about the server market are reported by eWeek.com:

HP shipped the most servers, with Dell second, IBM third, Sun fourth and Fujitsu fifth.

Blade and x86 servers dominated sales. "IDC said revenue for high-end servers grew 9.1 percent, while revenue for more midrange models dropped by 2.3 percent. UNIXR servers declined by 1.7 percent in terms of revenue."

Virtualization has slowed demand for servers.

Overall, server revenue climbed 9.1 percent from a year ago and reached $13 billion.

Shipments reached 2.2 million units, an increase of 4.4 percent in the third quarter. [...read more...]
