Weekly Summary:

Slow at work or hectic? Maybe some support and training will help in either case. Two promotions expire by the end of the month: one provides discounted support for NetBeans [17101] and the other for the Solaris 10 OS [17098].

Sun offers a course designed to introduce Sun Studio software to Solaris OS developers [17022]. Another course explains how Solaris 10 OS differs from version 8 and 9 [17086]. Sun Fire X4500 server maintenance details are covered in [17083].

The Netra CP3060 UltraSPARC T1 ATCA blade was part of the September product launch, and this week we cover its features such as its partitioning abilities and how it delivers extreme performance - learn more in article [17045].

Sun Fire servers continue to demonstrate their performance power in the recent selection by the NSF to fund an HPC center at UT Austin [17094].

Think outside the box: Project Blackbox is coming to datacenter near you. A bit bigger than a coffee to go, the cargo shipping container Sun has made into a mobile datacenter houses everything necessary to get up and running; see article number [17165] for details.

Two limited-time offers are featured in the Promotions section this week: One gets you free services with a Sun Blade 8000 system [17152] and the other saves you money on training with a Sun Fire x64 server [17158].

The Next-Generation AMD Opteron chips are making their way into more Sun servers: Read the details in [17162]. In other server news, Sun Cluster 3.1 support has been added to the Netra T2000 server [17138].

The Forum 2006 conference in Las Vegas this past week gave Sun executives the chance to discuss how storage customers, partners and vendors can get more value, access, simplicity and trust in managing their data. To promote interoperability and expand choices for customers, Sun introduced the Sun StorageTek Ready platform program (covered in article number [17144]). Also announced is a collaboration with FalconStor to create an enterprise level virtual tape library appliance [17146]. A new consulting service is available for meeting compliance regulations [17102].

Sun continues to promote its identity management solutions with a video that outlines the products and problems they solve [17104]. The value of grid computing is the topic Michael Schulman of Sun PTC Solutions discusses in article [17112].

This week's Security section points to a tech tip about important enhancements on the native security integration using Java Development Kit (JDK) 6 [17117]. Next week there will be more on security in AJAX.

Benchmark news is in for the Sun Blade 8000 system and Sun Fire E6900 server [17110]. A new white paper details the architecture of the new Sun Fire servers: V125, V215, V245 and V445 [17113].

This quarter Sun achieved double digit revenue growth year over year in each of its four geographies; see the earnings report and customer wins in article [17205].

The Oracle OpenWorld event gave Sun the chance to showcase some of its technologies (article [17195]). We have more on Project Blackbox, including a video peek inside the box ([17168]). Scaling down a datacenter isn't the only thing Sun is working on shrinking: the Niagara 3 chip will be built on 45 nanometer technology [17188].

The story of DTrace unfolds from the founders themselves [17167].
