Java.com Consumer-Friendly Site Provides Updates

Volume 103, Issue 1

Do you have the latest version of the JavaTM Runtime Environment (JRE) on your computer? You can test to see what version you have by going to the java.com page. The download from java.com, Sun's consumer-friendly site, is free and will allow web-based programs that use JavaTM technology-based software to run on your computer more easily.

JRE 5.0 Update 6 benefits:

Java software allows you to run applications called "applets" that are written in the Java programming language. These applets allow you to play online games, chat with people around the world, calculate your mortgage interest, and view images in 3D. Corporations also use applets for intranet applications and e-business solutions.

This installation will load the Java 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (JRE), which includes the Java Plug-in software and the JavaTM Virtual Machine (JVM) components needed to run Java technology based applets in a web browser. (Note: The terms 'Java Virtual Machine' and 'JVM' mean a Virtual Machine for the Java platform.) It will also download Java Web Start software which simplifies launching and running web-based programs that use Java technology based software. Java Web Start technology works with any browser and any Web server. Java Web Start ensures the most current version of the application will be deployed, as well as the correct version of the JRE.

Installation instructions:

The JRE can be installed on SolarisTM Operating System (Solaris OS) SPARCR systems, Solaris OS x86, Sun JavaTM Desktop System, Red Hat Linux, SUSE Linux, Windows (98, ME, 2000 (SP4+), 2003, XP (SP1, SP2)) for Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6.x, NetscapeTM 6.2x and 7, and MozillaTM 1.4+ web browsers.

See the java.com web site for the download. Help is also available on the download site.

Developers can get technical details about JRE from the Sun Developer Network (SDN) web site. [...read more...]
