Increase data center utilization and get the computing power you need to keep pace with increasing demands with Sun's newest Sun Fire systems and Sun Ultra workstations. These new products leverage the latest UltraSPARCR IV+ and Next-Generation Opteron processors to deliver better performance, efficiency and investment protection.

The UltraSPARC IV+ 64-bit processor is the fifth generation in the UltraSPARC processor family. It comes with significantly enhanced cores, 2 MB on-chip L2 cache and an off-chip 32 MB L3 cache. The processor follows Sun's Throughput Computing vision while continuing the tradition of binary code compatibility — and uses the latest 90 nanometer process technology.

Below are technical and competitive details on the products announced August 15, 2006 (covered in article number [16861]):

Sun Fire UltraSPARC IV+ Servers

Performance: Outperforms comparable servers from IBM by as much as 9 percent.

Resource Efficiency: Consolidating to Sun Fire servers can save customers millions annually by reducing the number of servers and software licenses, while cutting data center complexity.

Manageability: Add the new UltraSPARC IV+ uniboards to existing systems for immediate performance increase with no box swap.

Sun FireTM X2200 M2 Server

Performance: The highest performing 4-way 1RU x64 server in its class.

Resource Efficiency: With twice the memory capacity and networking connectivity, this server offers reduced power consumption and increased space efficiency compared to Xeon-based servers.

Manageability: Offers embedded lights out management (LOM) for remote power control, KVM and media capability, and remote monitoring of key hardware components at no extra charge.

Sun FireTM X2100 M2 Server

Performance: The only 2-way 1RU x64 server based on the AMD Opteron processor priced under $1,000 that offers industry leading price/performance.

Resource Efficiency: Runs virtually any operating system including SolarisTM Operating System (Solaris OS), Linux and Windows.

Manageability: Offers embedded LOM at no extra charge that enables remote and centralized management, making it easy to monitor thousands of systems.

Sun UltraTM 20 M2 Workstation

Performance: Offers 11 percent better performance than the HP xw93000 workstation as proven by the SPEC Pro/E Wildfire 2.0 benchmark.

Resource Efficiency: Solaris 10 OS is pre-installed at no cost; SunTM Studio Creator, Sun JavaTM Studio, and NetBeansTM IDE software included.

Manageability: Customers can use the same architecture to run 64- and 32-bit operating systems and applications with virtually no compromise in performance. "
