Sun selected EnterpriseDB, an open source database vendor, to provide technical support and related professional services and training for Sun's PostgreSQL offering. Sun recently integrated PostgreSQL into the SolarisTM 10 Operating System (Solaris OS). EnterpriseDB will also provide custom training classes for its engineering and technical support teams.

EnterpriseDB develops and supports EnterpriseDB Advanced Server, an enterprise-class relational database management system (RDBMS) that is built on PostgreSQL.

In February EnterpriseDB released a major upgrade to its database incorporating PostgreSQL 8.1.2 as well as new Oracle compatibility features and a integrated debugger, according to a report on TechWorld.

"We chose EnterpriseDB to work with us on PostgreSQL support, because we've been continually impressed by their PostgreSQL expertise, customer focus and support capabilities, and assets essential to providing enterprise class support for open source software to our customers," said Tom Goguen, vice president for system software, Sun.

Sun added PostgreSQL into the 6/06 release of Solaris 10 OS, the first time Sun had included a relational database as part of the distro, according to ITJungle. The report also stated that the fees for support are expected to be "modest" in comparison to closed source databases.
