Telecom Operators Reduce Capital Expenditures with Solutions from Sun
Sun Secure Mail and the Sun-Nominum Solution Ease Implementation and Branding of Services for ISPs

With increasing pressures on telecommunications companies to cut costs, Sun has been working on solutions specifically designed to do just that. In recent months, more telcos have adopted Sun's Secure Mail service and the DNS/DHCP solution from Sun and Nominum.

Sun Secure Mail is a fully-hosted managed service that allows service providers to offer a value-added solution to the challenges of email privacy and security. The service is easy for customers to use, requiring only a simple plug-in. BellSouth, USA.NET and Verizon have all launched Sun Secure Mail-based services for their customers.

Sun Secure Mail is powered by Echoworx and white-labeled for ISP to brand. It is offered as a monthly subscription service, creating recurring revenue for the provider. The subscriber does not require any additional software or hardware. It is fully managed by Sun for the ISP. The ISP save up front capital expenditures. The email is secure, based on industry-trusted encryption technology such as PKI, X.509, and S/MIME.

The next-generation Domain Name System (DNS) / Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) solution launched in March 2006 (see article number [16109]) with Nominum is designed to allow customers to deploy a scalable and resilient network naming and addressing infrastructure. The Sun-Nominum solution eases deployment, reduces cost and provides service availability and connectivity for broadband internet, VoIP and IPTV users. It offers DNS performance and resiliency while significantly reducing DNS query latency needed for real time applications. The result is a high-performance, scalable and highly available DNS infrastructure that enables telecommunications, cable and enterprise customers to meet the growing demand for high-quality Internet and IP-based services.

"Sun will continue to bring more telecoms solutions to the market in the coming year. These will be focused on helping telecom operators and service providers offer compelling new services while juggling the complex challenges of consolidation, convergence and cost containment," said Darrell Jordan-Smith, vice president, Communications, Sun.
