AMD's Commercial Systems Channel Program provides opportunities for channel members to showcase their innovations. AMD’s Accelerate magazine recently featured one such collaboration: Scalar Decisions of Toronto, AMD and Sun Microsystems created a new infrastructure for the Canadian Football League's (CFL) web site.
The collaboration made the CFL web site more interactive by providing site visitors with streaming video, fantasy league play, trivia games, polls and other entertainments. Accelerate magazine's David Hakala talked with Chris Sonnemann, senior project manager for the CFL, Toronto, about the changes: "We wanted an opportunity to connect with every fan individually, and a web site is perfect for that."
Scalar Decisions selected the Sun FireTM V20z server equipped with 2-way AMD OpteronTM processors Model 244 for the new infrastructure. Sonnemann wanted to improve the web site not only for current use but for future plans as well. The CFL has 10 years’ worth of legacy applications that it wants to migrate to Web-enabled open source applications. "Over time, we will be converting all of our legacy applications to Web apps," Sonnemann said.
The CFL needed a virtualized environment running two different operating systems, Hakala noted. The web site was developed on Red Hat Enterprise Linux® ES using the Apache Web server, MySQL and other open-source software. "The league also had a Microsoft® Windows® 2000-based reporting program that collected real-time data from statisticians at all games.
Using VMware virtualization software, Scalar was able to deliver the Web server and reporting program on one physical server. Another Sun Fire V20z server ran a security application under SolarisTM 10 Operating System (Solaris OS). Scalar Decisions will provide ongoing management and maintenance for the CFL’s IT infrastructure.
Roger Singh, vice president of technology for Scalar Decisions said, "The AMD processors provide great performance. The Sun Fire V20z has the management capabilities to provide higher uptime and easier remote management."
Scalar Decisions came on board the project at the recommendation of Sun Microsystems. Scalar developed out of The Enterprise Technology Group (ETG), a Sun partner. Scalar sees opportunities to help customers lower their IT costs and get the most out of their computing resources. They have also recently joined the new AMD Commercial Systems Channel Program.
Roger Singh said Solaris 10 OS has brought new opportunities to Scalar. "Significant performance gains have been demonstrated versus Solaris 9. The security built into Solaris 10 makes it a phenomenal product for edge systems, such as a web site."
President of Scalar, Paul Kerr said many of their projects involve server consolidation and virtualization because in Canada some large data centers are charging by the watt, not on floor space, making the AMD Opteron processor-based servers an ideal choice for energy efficiency.
