Jim Grisanzio, community manager, OpenSolaris, recapped some of the significant milestones along the way to the one-year anniversary of the OpenSolaris community.
In the past year since Sun open sourced the Solaris Operating System (Solaris OS), the OpenSolaris community has grown to more than 14,000 members. Also announced was the latest update to the Solaris 10 OS -- update 6/06.
In support of open source, Sun has joined the Dojo Foundation and the OpenAJAX Alliance to help drive open standards for AJAX programming and increase interoperability across AJAX technologies. The OpenAJAX Alliance formed earlier in 2006 and was announced at the OpenAJAX Summit in May. Dojo provides an open source JavaScript toolkit.
In April 2006, the Reuters Market Data System (RMDS) was made available on the Solaris 10 Operating System (Solaris OS), gaining the interest of financial services market. RMDS 6.0 delivers real-time news, data feeds and information about trading orders and prices to financial institutions.
Dwayne Lee, OpenSPARC community manager, follows up on the recent news announcement that Ubuntu is available for the UltraSPARC processor (see article [16499]) by listing download sites for Ubuntu. Ubuntu 6.06 is a GNU/Linux distribution.
