fault-tolerant Netra ft 1800 server NEBS-certified system with better that "Five Nines" Availability
The fault-tolerant Netra ft 1800 server is a NEBS-certified
system designed to meet the most stringent telecom-critical
requirements for Intelligent Network (IN) and Advanced Intelligent
Network (AIN) applications such as signal control processing, emergency
911 and directory and authentication services. Unlike competitors, who
have been touting "five nines" as the Holy Grail of computing
availability without delivering, Sun's Netra ft 1800 server provides
greater than 99.999 percent availability today -- which translates to
less than five minutes of both planned and unplanned downtime each
year.
Unlike traditional fault-tolerant servers, which are based on
proprietary operating systems, the Netra ft 1800 server is powered by
the open, robust Solaris operating environment. Standard Solaris
enables carriers and network equipment providers (NEPs) to develop
applications on any Sun workstation or server and deploy the
application on the Netra ft 1800 without modification, resulting in
ample cost savings and significantly faster time-to-market with new
services. Telecom service providers traditionally have been forced to
undergo the time-consuming and expensive task of porting and testing
their applications before deploying them on fault tolerant platforms,
because there are no fully compatible "commercial" systems for
application development.
As the Netra ft 1800 server leverages Sun's
industry-leading commercial computing technology -- Solaris, UltraSPARC
and Sun Enterprise servers -- Sun is able to deliver a fault tolerant
solution at a much lower price point. The Netra ft 1800 can be up to
fifty percent less expensive than comparable solutions from Stratus and
Compaq/Tandem. (To date, HP has yet to deliver a fault tolerant
system.) And while the Stratus and Compaq/Tandem servers are NEBS
compliant, only Sun's Netra ft 1800 is NEBS certified by Bellcore for
added peace of mind.
