Sun: Platform for Next Generation Telecom Services
Includes Fault Tolerant Servers

Augmenting its current product and service offerings for the telecommunications industry, Sun announced the computer industry's most comprehensive suite of programs to meet the unique business needs of telecom network equipment providers (NEPs). The new programs and initiatives allow OEM telecom equipment manufacturers access to the management, engineering and equipment resources needed to build integrated, reliable and high-performance telecom solutions based on the Sun computing platform.

Telecom equipment providers are responsible for delivering network solutions that can handle the mission critical data, voice, and video services on which consumers and businesses rely. Therefore, telecom companies not only have rigid standards for equipment reliability, but also adhere to an established set of procedures and conventions for entering business partnerships and making network equipment purchases. Sun is demonstrating that it can effectively work with its telecom OEMs by establishing the following programs:

- Telecom OEM Program Office - an organization of focused and dedicated telecom OEM account managers that can quickly and thoroughly respond to the needs of telecom customers

- Telecom Product Integration Labs - dedicated teams of engineers who work with telecom equipment providers to build integrated telecom solutions to fulfill customer-specific configurations

- ftSAFE Program - enables Sun and third-party vendors of PCI modules to make their products rugged enough for peak performance in Sun's Netra ft 1800 fault tolerant server.

Integrating Technologies into Telecom Solutions

Most telecom networks consist of multi-vendor product offerings, so Sun has opened its Telecom Product Integration Lab, which is staffed with dedicated engineering teams who integrate Sun's rugged telecom products with products from third-party vendors. These teams of software, hardware and mechanical engineers work with Sun's OEM customers to build integrated solutions that meet specific configurations requested by telephone companies and other network service providers.
