Oracle has added two new thin client devices to its desktop virtualization portfolio, the Sun Ray 3 Client and the Sun Ray 3i Client, both of which provide customers with a desktop computing solution designed to increase security, improve employee access, and reduce the maintenance, upgrade, and operational costs associated with traditional desktop environments, according to Oracle's product release announcement.

Enabling Smart Card Access for Oracle Virtual Desktop Client [23422]
Without Having to Use the Command Line

Last month's patch updates to the Sun Ray Server Software enabled smart card support for the Oracle Virtual Desktop Client (OVDC), formerly the Sun Desktop Access Client. Documentation advises use of the command line if wanting to enable smart card sessions. However, for those adventurous ones, Jörg Barfurth explains how to enable smart card access for OVDC by going "under the hood in the SRSS 4.2 Administration GUI." He shares the coding necessary to take advantage of this latest update.

PC/SC-Lite 1.3 Released for Sun Ray Server Software [23337]
Increases Security, Improves Stability of Smart Card Use in Sun Ray Environment.

Sun Ray Server Software users running Solaris 10 are advised to download PC/SC-lite 1.3 and CCID IFD Handler 1.3.10. The PC/SC-lite 1.3 comes with three bug fixes, two of which have been described as critical. The CCID IFD Handler v1.3.10 is designed to be used with PC/SC-lite to enable PC/SC-compliant applications and middleware to use external USB smart card readers on Sun Ray clients.
