October 2011 Critical Patch Updates Released [24797]
Includes Patch Release for Java SE

Two patch updates were released in October 2011, reports Eric Maurice in his oracle.com/security blog. One is the October 2011 Critical Patch Update and the other the Critical Patch Update for Java SE"] The latter provides fixes for 20 new security vulnerabilities, Maurice reports, and the former provides fixes for 57 new security vulnerabilities. He points out that, because of Oracle's diligence in identifying and fixing vulnerabilities, the number of required fixes declines with each passing release.

Solaris 10 8/11 (Update 10) [24748]
Patchset now available

The Solaris 10 8/11 (Update 10) patchset is now available from My Oracle Support (MOS). While these patchsets will bring all pre-existing packages up to the same software level as the corresponding Solaris Update, it is important to know that, as the blog points out, applying the patchset is not the same as upgrading to the Solaris Update release, as the patchset will not include any new packages introduced in the Solaris Update or any obsolete packages deleted in the Update.

His procedure answers the often-heard question "How do I package up my own app as an IPS package?" which Beal says is a frequent concern. Using smpatch to Apply Solaris Cluster Patches and Other Enhancements [24495]
System Must Be Registered as User-based Rather than S/N-based

With the built-in Solaris 10 patch automation utility, 'smpatch' / Update Manager users can once again download patches for products such as Oracle Solaris Cluster and Oracle Solaris Studio, as well as Oracle Solaris Operating System patches. Systems must be registered or re-registered for users to switch 'smpatch' / Update Manager from using hardware-serial-number-based access entitlement to user based access entitlement.
