HPC Biomedical Image Analysis System Satisfies Researchers Need for Speed

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) is a leading research university which recently turned to Sun to help design a high-performance biomedical image analysis system. The university selected Sun because it could provide a more customized solution and better support for image-intensive applications. The UNC-CH grid is called the Biomedical Analysis and Simulation Supercomputer (BASS) system, which integrates Sun Fire servers, StorageTek systems and management tools with NVIDIA visual computing systems.

The institution has imported over 60 applications onto GlassFish from Weblogic. The free Java EE-based application server is an attractive alternative for many higher education institutions who have to contend with budget constraints while maintaining high quality IT services for its users.

Minnesota’s Saint Paul College plans on implementing a textbook-free curriculum beginning this fall semester, and will offer some courses using Sun's Project Wonderland, a Java and open-source toolkit for creating collaborative 3D virtual worlds, as part of an immersive virtual reality teaching project. The text-free curriculum was an easy decision for the the two-year technical college that has offered students access to the computer resources they needed anytime, anywhere, from any computer with Sun Ray 1 clients for 10 years.

Colorado State University's new Computer Science Building boasts 30 Sun Fire X4100 servers, 24 Sun Ray monitors and peripherals, 200 chairs, 30 tables and 60 cubicles, among other items that are estimated to be worth over $233,000 and the higher learning institution got it all for free. Sun helped furnish the Fort Collins university's state-of-the-art computer science center, which recently held its official grand opening.

Some 700 Worldwide on College and University Campuses

Sun has some 700 campus ambassadors at work around the world. One of them, Jakub Kotowski, ambassador to the University of Munich or Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), blogs on the role and its responsibilities, explaining that ambassadors are students and temporary Sun employees whose responsibility is to promote open-source technologies from Sun and try to create and foster a community of students interested in Sun technologies as well as open-source in general.
