'Multicore Application Programming' [23929]
An Interview with the Author, Darryl Gove

Darryl Gove, author of "Multicore Application Programming" talks with InformIT writer Jim Mauro about programming with threads and concurrency, as well as the current state of multi-threaded application software, and the effectiveness of automatic parallelization technology. Gove concludes his comments with the observation that, "Multicore processors are a great opportunity for developers. They have placed parallel application development at a much more accessible price point than multiprocessor systems. The are also a more forgiving platform than multiprocessor systems." And, he notes, this is just the beginning of the exciting discovery of what can be done with multiple threads.

Overview of Oracle Solaris Studio Compilers & Tools [23918]
Get to Know the Components and Features

The "Compile My Code blog" contains a link to a pdf that provides an overview of Oracle Solaris Studio Compilers and Tools. Oracle Solaris Studio is the solution that provides everything required to develop C, C++, and Fortran applications to run in Oracle Solaris 10 on SPARC or x86 and x64 platforms, or in Oracle Linux on x86 and x64 platforms. The compilers and tools in Oracle Solaris Studio are engineered to make applications run optimally on Oracle Sun systems. The blog notes that Oracle Solaris Studio tools are designed to leverage the capabilities of multicore CPUs including the Sun SPARC T3, UltraSPARC T2, and UltraSPARC T2 Plus processors, and the Intel Xeon and AMD Opteron processors. The tools allow users to more easily create parallel and concurrent software applications for these platforms.

Solaris Studio and Solaris 11 Express [23692]
Guaranteed Binary Compatibility with Studio + Solaris

Yet more from LISA10, this time a 28:11 video from Vijay Tatkar's blog that covers a discussion Tatkar and Don Kretsch had with OTN's Rick Ramsey on Solaris Studio. A significant part of the discussion centered on the unique Application Binary Compatibility Guarantee to be found in Studio + Solaris. Tatkar writes that " ... binaries built on several previous releases of Solaris (from Solaris 2.6 and up) and with Studio compilers, will continue to run on newer versions of Solaris," without, he adds, the introduction of incompatibilities.

What's Great in Solaris 11 Express for Developers [23694]
Oracle Invites Developers to Jump Aboard, Help with the Ride to GA

Oracle Solaris 11 Express has a number of new features that application developers will find interesting and useful. George Drapeau of Oracle ISV engineering discusses some of these with Rick Ramsey on OTN in a 19:45 video. The items under discussion include the use of Solaris 10 branded zones and new DTrace probe, along with the new security and availability features and virtualization features that enterprise developers in particular can employ. Drapeau explains that the release was built to provide developers the opportunity to familiarize themselves with what they will find in Solaris 11 when it is in general availability. Standard Oracle support options are available for those users who wish to take advantage of them, according to Drapeau.
