Sun's line of Galaxy servers will be adding an eight-socket version as well as a new blade server, reports Darrell Dunn with InformationWeek, who quotes Sun Executive Vice President John Fowler of the company's Network Systems Group as saying this will address the server consolidation and database server market and re-enter Sun into the blade server market.

Nearly 25% of Voters Picked x64 and SPARC-based Sun Fire Servers
The annual Supercomputing Online Reader's Choice Award for Product of the Year is Sun's family of x64 (x86, 64-bit) and SPARCR-based Sun FireTM servers. Sun Fire servers received close to 25 percent of the 1,000 total votes among the 12 nominated high-performance computing (HPC) products, including those from HP and IBM.

Replacement models for the Sun FireTM V440 servers that are in compliance with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive of the European Union should be generally available March 20, 2006. Features of the Sun Fire V440 systems remain the same as the previous version other than these new systems are fully compliant with required standards of the RoHS.

The Sun FireTM X4100 and Sun FireTM X4200 servers have set three new x86 world records on SPECjbb2005 benchmark (bops/JVMTM) with the following operating systems: SolarisTM 10 Operating System (Solaris OS), Microsoft Windows 2003 Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4. The Sun FireTM X2100 servers also helped set a world record on the EXA PowerFLOW benchmark.

End of Life for Sun Fire V20z Standard Configurations and Options [15757]

Sun has deemed the end of life (EOL) for the Sun FireTM V20z servers in favor of the new Sun FireTM X4100 and Sun FireTM X4200 servers. The last order date is set for April 10, 2006, last ship date is June 30, 2006, and the end of service life is June 30, 2011.
