Microsoft Releases Windows Thin PC OS for Virtual Desktops [24360]
Repurpose Existing PCs as Thin Clients

The VAR Guy comments on the release by Microsoft of its Windows thin PC OS for virtual desktops. He writes that the new thin PC is essentially a custom operating system that IT admins can install on old machines in the workplace, re-purposing them as Windows thin clients for companies with Microsoft VDI deployments. The Windows Thin PC, he continues, features unique virtualization technologies including RemoteFX, which offers a virtual desktop experience. Under-the-hood tweaks protect the underlying operating system and physical machine being repuposed from being accessed by unscrupulous users. Microsoft is offering a free 90-day trial of the Thin PC.

The blog post Using Windows Previous Versions to Access ZFS Snapshots discusses the straightforward way in which one can use Shadow Copies for Shared Folders to view or recover files from ZFS snapshots. Even better, the blog points out, is the fact that the Windows desktop provides an easy to use, intuitive GUI and does not require configuration to use or access previous versions of files or folders. On Windows clients, the blog continues, snapshots are accessible via the Previous Versions tab in Windows Explorer using the Shadow Copy client, which is available by default on Windows XP SP2 and later. For Windows 2000 and pre-SP2 Windows XP, the client software is available for download from Microsoft: Shadow Copies for Shared Folders Client.
