Oracle Solaris Cluster 3.3 5/11 Release [24359]
Top Choice for Both High Availability and Disaster Recover in Physical and Virtual Environments
In his blog post "A New Oracle Solaris Cluster Release" Markus Weber draws attention to the availability of Oracle Solaris Cluster 3.3 5/11, a new High Availability and Disaster Recovery solution for use in mission critical services that enables the safe deployment on physical and virtual environments whether local or global. Weber points his readers to Oracle's own announcement on the release, which notes that Oracle Solaris Cluster is a unique HA solution for Oracle Solaris virtual environments that lowers the inherent risk of consolidated infrastructures by leveraging redundancy to protect from outages. Oracle Solaris Cluster Disaster Recovery (DR) option further extends these benefits to multi-site, multi-cluster architectures to protect against planned and unplanned downtime in both physical and virtual environments.

Install Oracle Solaris 11 Express on Oracle VM VirtualBox [24267]
Solaris 11 Express Version of Solaris-VM Lab
In a lab that is the first of a forthcoming series, students can learn what is necessary for Installing Oracle Solaris 11 Express in Oracle VM VirtualBox. The lab consists of several exercises:
- Exercise 1: Download the Oracle Solaris 10 09/10 Appliance Image for Oracle VM VirtualBox
- Exercise 2: Import the Solaris 11 Express VM into VirtualBox
- Exercise 3: Start the Solaris 11 Express VM
All of which, Brian Leonard, author of the lab writes, leaves students with " ... an environment in which you can begin to learn about all the great features in Solaris 11. And with VirtualBox's snapshot feature, you never have to worry about messing anything up as you can always rollback to a prior state."

ZFS Features by Version [24249]
From ZFS Version 1 to Version 5, from iSCSI to Triple Parity RAID-Z
In his Oracle blog post on ZFS zpool and file system version numbers and features Steffen Weiberle points out that ZFS versions are conveniently backward compatible but that the reverse is not the case. It is therefore important, he writes, to know what the oldest kernel version is that one might with to attach a pool to, making sure that upgrades are not made that would render this impossible. He then provides a helpful table that lists the ZFS feaures introduced in Solaris 10 updates.

Automating ZFS Snapshots and Tracking Software Updates [24236]
Part 2 of a Series on Oracle Solaris 11 Express Software Management Best Practices
In Part 2 of her series "Software Management Best Practices for Oracle Solaris 11 Express," "Automating ZFS Snapshots and Tracking Software Updates," Ginny Henningsen describes how Oracle Solaris 11 Express uses automated snapshots to deliver Time Slider services, a new feature in the GNOME desktop. Using Time Slider, she writes, users can take periodic snapshots of the active Boot Environment (BE), capturing the software state at regular intervals, which can prove useful if you forget to explicitly create a BE when you update software.
BEs, Henningsen goes on to explain, a built-in safety net when to be used in making software changes, much like Live Upgrade environments in Oracle Solaris 10. In Oracle Solaris 11 Express, the root file system is implemented using Oracle Solaris ZFS, so BEs are basically Oracle Solaris ZFS snapshots that are readable/writable and activated for booting. This underlying technology enables users to periodically generate snapshots of BEs just like you can take a snapshot of any Oracle Solaris ZFS volume.

- Device Detection Tool
- Hardware Certification Test Suite
- Information about Oracle's Solaris-Ready Program
The HCL lists all the hardware, including servers, desktops, laptops, and peripheral devices, that are compatible with Oracle Solaris 10 and Oracle Solaris 11 Express.
